Fluoride. Friend or Foe?

If you knew someone gave you a “drug” without your consent would you be angry? What if you found out that this “drug” could potentially cause abnormal health outcomes? And what if you found out you have been taking this “drug” for most of your life? Well for those of you that have not been drinking your water from a well that is exactly what has been happening. The fluoride that is put into our water supply is supposed to prevent tooth decay. It is considered a medical treatment and it is being administered to us without our consent. According to The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) there are numerous health risks associated with fluoride exposure.

This makes me very angry!

The CDC and the American Dental Association highlight the benefits of fluoridated water in relation to decreasing the level of cavities in our children. But is it the fluoridated water that should be credited or is it the increase in fluoridated products on the market and the availability of dental care to lower income populations?

Topically, fluoride is very effective in reducing cavities but ingesting it has little effect according to the Journal of Paediatrics & Child Health

I personally don’t think that I should have to ingest something that carries a warning label as a toxic substance to protect those that don’t brush their teeth. Don’t get me wrong I do think we need to protect our children but the studies around the effects of fluoride on cognitive development in children makes me question if we are doing the right thing for our kids. “In a meta-analysis, researchers from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and China Medical University in Shenyang for the first time combined 27 studies and found strong indications that fluoride may adversely affect cognitive development in children.”

There are just as many studies that demonstrate the benefits of fluoridated water in decreasing the rate of cavities in children. My concern is the health risks to the fetus in utero, those that have renal insufficiency, the effects on a child’s neuro and cognitive development, increased risk of fractures in adults, and in general the overall long term negative effects.

“In 2015, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a recommendation for the optimal fluoride level that should be in drinking water to prevent tooth decay. This new recommendation is for a single level of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water, opposed to the 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter recommendation issued in 1962, which is now the standard.” They must believe we are consuming higher than appropriate levels!

I guess if there is one message I would like to deliver it is that we are being administered a “drug” and there are risks as well as benefits. You may choose to continue to ingest fluoride but if you wish to prevent or at least decrease your exposure to fluoride there are things you can do. Your standard water filter like Brita or Pur will not remove fluoride. Boiling or freezing will not take fluoride out and may actually make it more concentrated. There are 3 techniques you can implement:

  1. Purchase a filter. There are special types that are designed to remove fluoride.
  2. Purchase Spring Water. Beware though most brands do contain some fluoride so you want to ensure it has less than 0.2 ppm. You can check popular brands for their content here.
  3. Water Distillation - A distillation unit will remove most, if not all, of the fluoride. These units depending on size can cost as little as $200 and can run in excess of $1,000.

Eating healthy and exercising are so important but we also need to be mindful of the contaminants we are ingesting. Pesticides, GMO’s, Artificial colors, Processed food, Pollution, BPA’s, Fluoride, the list goes on and on. While we do not have control over everything, we can make a conscious decision about many. Our body has miraculous abilities but we need to do our part and help it along.

You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

You don’t know what you don’t know! One of my favorite sayings. Well thanks to the internet it is easy to learn about the things we don’t know. My mother smoked and drank alcohol while she was pregnant with me. She loved telling me about how I kicked the ashtray off her belly. Back then in the 60’s they thought the placenta would protect the baby from anything ingested. I ate hot dogs and lemonade almost everyday for lunch while I was pregnant. I knew by then in the 80’s that alcohol and cigarettes were a no no. But lemonade and hot dogs? Come on! What is so bad about that? Well, you don’t know what you don’t know. Soon after my little bundle of joy was delivered I enrolled in nursing school. That is when my journey began. Read more

Three Essential Steps to Improving Gut Health and Why it’s Important

“All disease begins in the gut.” — Hippocrates

When I was about 25 years of age I started having some GI problems. It started occasionally and then became more and more consistent. Ok, it is a topic most people don’t like to talk about. Diarrhea! Yup. I said it. Now it is out. Everybody now knows about my little problem. After going to multiple doctors and specialists and trying a variety of medications that didn’t work or made matters worse I started to do my own research. 17 years later I now live a normal life. Well at least my bowel habit is normal(ahem).

Our Second Brain
Do you think our stomach is strictly for processing the food we eat? Think again. Our gut has been called the second brain by some scientists. Our “gut”, also called our alimentary or digestive system goes from our mouth to our anus and is approximately 30 feet long.

It is called the second brain due to the similarities to our “1st brain”. The gut is imbedded with sheaths of neurons and a lot of them. About 100 million which is more than either the spinal cord or the peripheral nervous system according to Michael Gershon who is an expert in the field of neurogastroenterology and the author of the 1998 book, “The Second Brain”. This system known as the “enteric nervous system” sends and receives messages, and responds to emotions just like the brain. So although the gut cannot think deeply or intellectually it can affect the entire physiology of the body just as our brain can. The brain can affect our gut and our gut can affect our brain.

What are some of the problems that might be caused by poor gut health?

  • High cholesterol
  • Osteoporosis
  • Depression
  • Chronic anemia
  • Menstrual complaints
  • Hormonal problems
  • PMS
  • Breast enlargement in men
  • Prostate issues
  • Candida infection
  • Chronic vaginal infections
  • Anemia
  • Food allergies and intolerances
  • Vitamin B deficiencies
  • Neurological problems

Egg Shell Bone Broth

Say what? Yup, your eyes are not deceiving you. Those are egg shells in my bone broth. I was going to start by telling you about all the miraculous properties of bone broth. I mean if you google it you will find tons of articles that say it is good for joint health, gut health, immune system, beautification of skin, decrease cellulite, strengthens the enamel on your teeth, and I am sure there are more claims that I have not hit on. The problem is that all of those claims are not all scientifically proven. Just because you are pulling out minerals and compounds from bones does not necessarily mean it is going to go straight into our bones, skin, and teeth. Read more
